Rap-rock has an awful connotation. Absolutely atrocious.

Bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn come to mind when you think of this 90's hybrid with lots of screaming and absolute crap. So, even though Heavy Mojo, one of Atlanta's finest local acts, may be integrating hip hop and rock, we'll steer clear of calling them a part of that genre.

On stage, the band puts on a highly energetic, instrumentally-focused show that combines classic rock and old school hip hop influences. It's highly doubtful that any punk band in the city can top the head thrashing that goes on stage during Heavy Mojo's set. Live, the band seamlessly blends in covers of Nirvana, David Bowie, and more with their original songs. Their live show's notoriety has garnered them attention across the city and won them the 'Best Live Act' award at the inaugural Atlanta Music Guide Awards, along with a judge's score of 99 (1 point short of perfect) at Andrews Upstairs' final round of March Bandness 2005.

With B Dirty, Priest, and Simon, the band's three emcees/vocalists at the helm, Heavy Mojo's magnetic, infectious lyrics and on stage antics extract the attention of any crowd. Esteemed guitarist Ryan Waters, keyboardist DD Fingers, bassist Danny Silvestri, and drummer Marlon Patton round out the group. The trademark "Heavy Heavy" sound is more akin to Outkast & early Beastie Boys with Led Zeppelin instrumentation than the typical processed hip hop that infiltrates the airwaves today.

The band is currently in the process of mixing their debut full length album with Russ Fowler and James Salter at Berkley Park. The forthcoming effort is slated for a late May/early June release on the group's own label, jAnK Recordings.

It's apparent that music and entertaining the crowd is Heavy Mojo's first priority. The seven piece doesn't just straddle the thin line between rock and hip-hop - they pounce on it, rip it in half, and laugh.
