John studied composition with Anthony Vazanna, Ellis Kohs and David Raksin at USC (where he also received BA in Cinema-Tv Production). He continued studying advanced composition with David Raksin and Mort Lauridsen. While a film student he composed original scores for his own projects as well as many of his fellow student film-makers. He was the first and to-date only cinema school graduate accepted to the Advanced Studies Program: Writing Music for Films and TV. While in graduate school, he studied orchesteration with Alexander Courage and film composition technique with Bruce Broughton, Lawrence Rosenthal and the late Jerry Goldsmith. Immediately upon graduation, John began working as a copyist for Peter Matz and an orchestrator for Peter Tomashek. In 1987, he received a commission from the Astronaut's Memorial Foundation to write an eulogy for the crew of the USS Challenger. He orchestrated the eulogy for 7 brass instruments (one for each member of the crew) and named it THE FORAGING. The FORAGING received it's premier performance at Schoenberg Hall on the campus at USC. Since 1988, he has been working as an independent documentary film-maker, storyboard illustrator/concept artist and composer.

He is currently working on "AN Evening in Singapore" and new band music with Brenda Le and Kaori Osaka.
