"Making music is in my blood," says Jay Starr, 19, an assertion that may be more fact than cliche... Quite a few of her relatives are in the music business. From her grandmother Jessie, who was an original member of the LA Gospel Jewels, to her uncle Dell Rowels, who is the CEO of IV Life Records, and even her cousin Monty, also known as Mac 10 of the Westside Connection. Jay Starr didn't have to stray far to learn how to spit. Today, as she strolls through Los Angeles musing about the present-day artists that inspire her craft, it's clear that the rap prodigy studies hip hop with an eye on greatness. "I'm a mixture of Weezy's swagger, Ludacris' way of using metaphors, Eminems carefree attitude, and Nas' knowledge," she says. "All I need to master is Tupac's ability to make people feel your emotions." Pretty ambitious, huh? Starr's support isn't limited to her family. Trey Dee once said, "She's gonna be the next Queen of Cali." Pegged by many as a catalyst to resurrect West Coast hip hop, Starr downplays the praise; "I just want to make music you can groove to, be consistent, and let the streets decide what's hot."
