It's tough for only one man to get onstage and truly entertain a crowd. Afterall, if something goes wrong in the music you can't look over and blame it on the bass player(which is what I always use to do.)Nope, when you play solo you have to be on it all the time, both guitar and vocals.Despite being "on it" you have to be appealing to a crowd, you want everyone in the place to be totally entertained with no thoughts of leaving to see if something better is going on somewhere else(you have to be the kind of player where the club owner can tear down the chicken wire from in front of the stage when you play.)One of his most gifted abilities is reading the crowd, because every club he plays has a different clientel and it's his job to decide what songs will go over well for that particular scene. Shane never uses a setlist because he never knows what type crowd he may encounter...so all of his shows are personalized for the people then and there.
