Eponymous debut EP “Spook the Horse” from this Seattle, WA sextet possesses great power and range, demonstrating unique song writing and compositional restraint. The opening track, “Fireside,” introduces each instrument one by one, slowly revealing the depth and textures of Spook the Horse’s sound. Songs like “Drag” and Sounds” are boisterous, tightly knit, and full of original vocal hooks. “Blasted Orchestra,” maintains an almost mechanical-like feel only to be cut free, opening up like a triumphant celebration. On the other hand “C and I” and “Old Ironside” display more macabre melodic arrangements, slowing the pace and revealing a dark, haunting side to Spook the Horse. “Walls” the zenith of all of these aspects is an epic ending to this self-produced debut album. All six members graduated from the same high school in Bellingham, WA and have played in various bands together as long as they have been friends.
